HIGH SCHOOL IS HARD ENOUGH WITHOUT BASICALLY BEING A DEATH GOD

Every time seventeen-year-old Charlie Ford touches someone, they absorb seconds of their life . . . which adds up when Charlie has no way of giving that time back. It feels like enough of a curse without Lou―the bratty bully of a ghost who’s hung around Charlie since childhood―forcing them to hand over that stolen life for her to use.

Charlie will steal life from whomever Lou tells them to, as long as she doesn’t hurt Charlie’s twin Sam or their best friend and secret crush Ravi. So when Lou tries to force Charlie to take life from Ravi, Charlie refuses, and Lou retaliates.

When Lou goes after Sam, Charlie breaks down and finally tells Ravi about their life-stealing abilities―and after some internet sleuthing, Ravi finds out that Charlie might not be the only person born with that power. Along with Sam, they embark on a weekend road trip to meet a pair of self-proclaimed “death gods,” hoping for answers and, if they’re lucky, a solution to the whole Lou problem. But the answers about their powers only bring up more questions. With dark discoveries at every turn, Charlie must wrestle with a supernatural legacy that redefines their relationships to Sam and Ravi―and calls their very humanity into question.

This irreverent contemporary fantasy is the first book in a duology.

What I Liked: This book does a great job of introducing you to Charlie and his fears regarding his ability to take life from others. It then introduces you to Sam, Charlie’s twin sister, and his best friend, Ravi. These relationships are important to establish from the start of the story, as they become extremely relevant throughout the rest of the book. Another important relationship to establish at the start is Charlie’s ability to see a ghost named Lou. The mystery regarding Lou and Sam’s constant sickness is fascinating to see play out as it keeps you on your toes, guessing what could be going on.

While the mystery of Charlie and Sam’s grandparents is apparent to the reader, there is still some guessing to it because you aren’t sure if your assumptions are correct. There is a surprise as the truth about their grandparents and the powers they both have unravels. It’s heartbreaking to learn the truth and to see the mother reveal her true feelings for her children.

Ravi’s humor is a great addition to this book, especially in tense moments. His flirtatious nature causes some fun moments with the DaRosa twins as they are caught in some terrifying scenarios. This humor is helpful to break up more dramatic scenes and moments in which you are on the verge of tears because of what Charlie has come to realize.

The best part about this book is the pacing, as each moment is full of action; the book doesn’t give you a minute to breathe. Right when you believe that Charlie and his friends are out of danger, something new pops up and threatens what they know. Through each of these moments, more of Charlie’s family history is revealed, and we learn more about the world in which this story takes place.

Final Verdict: I was a Teenage Death God is an action-packed adventure that follows Charlie and his sister as they try to get answers about Charlie’s predicament of taking life whenever he comes into physical contact with someone else. This book is perfect for young adults ages 14 and up, as they will enjoy the relationships displayed throughout the book and the feelings that Charlie has to grapple with. It’s a must-read if you’re a fan of supernatural romance, mythology, or fantasy.
