Get a close-up look at the world of insects with a delightfully illustrated guide to the fascinating insects, bugs, arachnids, and other creatures that populate our planet by the billions.

Millions of species of insects fly, crawl, dig, swarm, and eat on every continent. Our very existence depends on them; without pollinators, we would have no food, and without decomposers, the world would be covered in decaying plant and animal material. With her signature style, Julia Rothman delves into this incredible world, uncovering amazing facts about bees, beetles, butterflies, and so much more.

INSECT ANATOMY is an encyclopedia-like book that explores the world of insects and bugs. Covering a wide array of topics, it delves into some of the most common questions people might have about these creatures, while also talking about some of the questions people might not have even thought to ask about.

The information included in this book covers a wealth of topics. Some brief examples are anatomy of a mantis, ant antics, how insects eat, and many more. I especially enjoyed that each section seemed to provide the basic anatomy for the insects that they were discussing in that chapter. It allows for a quick breakdown before discussing the insect in-depth. Some of the information in this book will be easily understood by many readers, but other bits of information might only be understood by higher-level readers or readers with a vested interest in insects. This is due to how scientific some of the topics/words can be.

The illustrations in this book are beautifully intricate. It’s very impressive how lifelike they look, with the little details always being included to showcase the full appearance of the insect. The illustrations are also colorful, as nature can be, and they draw the reader’s attention to the images. While I loved getting to learn a bunch of new information about insects, I will admit that the art stole the show for me.

The end of the book also diverges from just sharing insect information and leans into insects and you. With a section on eating insects, an interview with an entomologist, and information about how to build a bug hotel; it provides bonus information for readers, even a couple of ideas on how readers can learn more or set up spaces for insects.

The age rating for this book is not clearly listed anywhere online. It seems like everyone had differing opinions, which does make sense. The many images in this book can allow younger readers to enjoy it, even if they don’t understand all the words. The surplus of information might appeal to adults as well as children. The writing in this book, on which we determined the age range, does appear to be leaning towards a middle grade audience. While it might suit a wide variety of ages, children aged 10 and up will likely be able to fully understand and appreciate this book.

INSECT ANATOMY is a wonderfully detailed book, providing more information than I ever could have expected but still only managing to scratch the surface. With gorgeous illustrations and a decently wide array of topics covered, it’s a brilliant book for readers intrigued by insects and bugs.
