Meet the Author: Danny Go!
Danny Go! is a beloved live-action educational children’s show filled with music, movement, and silliness. Created in 2019 by three childhood friends in Charlotte, North Carolina, the show inspires learning and off-the-couch exercise for kids. From his earliest childhood, Aleksandar Zolotić expressed his imagination and observation through drawings. Years later, he graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, Serbia, with a degree in illustration and animation. Since then, his illustrations have complemented award-winning children’s books, video games, board games, animation, and comics. Credit for all mentioned goes to his family—his wife and two children—because of their endless support.

YABC: What inspired you to write this book?
Since early on in our journey, we’d talked as a team about how we could translate our interactive videos into books that can be enjoyed off-screen and at your own pace. And as one of our most-viewed videos, the volcano adventure felt like a natural topic to try first. Plus, the aesthetics of a volcano filled with ice gems just sounded enticing to us!
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
My personal favorite moment of the book is when the giant volcanic slug is launching fireballs at Danny and the reader must ‘cool them off’ by blowing on them before they land. Creating the right interactive elements for this book when the reader can’t really get up and move around proved to be a challenge, but I’m proud of what we came up with. And that moment in particular has such a fun mix of humor and peril that I love.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the red hot color palette! Our illustrator Aleksandar is such a master with colors and those volcanic vibes really highlight the sense of adventure and peril in the story.
YABC: What is the main message or lesson you want your reader to remember from this book?
I’d love for kids to walk away from this story with a sense of accomplishment and a confidence that they’ve got what it takes to get through challenging things. Just like in our videos, we try to make kids feel like they are integral in helping Danny get through the adventure.
YABC: Do you have a playlist you listened to while writing?
Absolutely! I’m a big believer in mood music and we’ll often put on topic-specific background music for our group writing sessions. For this Volcano Adventure, we found some good fantasy action playlists that set the right tone for battling a volcanic slug in a river of lava!
YABC: What kind of animal would your main character be and why?
Danny is a high-energy, optimistic character that often jumps, climbs or swings his way out of trouble. He’s got to be some kind of monkey!
YABC: If you could collaborate with any other writer in history, who would it be?
I’d have to say Beatrix Potter. The way she could create such coziness and warmth in her stories always stuck with me as a child. But there’s also so many good tongue-in-cheek humor moments in her writing that still make me laugh as an adult. I also greatly admire the fact that she did her own illustrations. Each one is a work of art!
YABC: What’s up next for you?
We’re going to keep on doing what we love: writing songs, creating videos, developing toys and writing more books! This Volcano Adventure is the first in a series of interactive books we’ve been working on. We’re excited to share more soon!
YABC: Is there anything that you would like to add?
I’d just like to add a note of gratitude for our illustrator Aleksandar Zolotic. This book represents the first major creative collaboration with someone outside of our core team, and we were nervous about finding the right artist to bring our ideas to life on the page. But Aleksandar has completely blown us away with both his skill and vision for these adventures. We truly couldn’t be happier with how his illustrations have come together!
