When Uncle Jerome picks up Zarah and her brother from school, suggesting that they take "the long way home," Zarah groans. She hates long walks! But this walk turns into something completely different . . .
Uncle Jerome's imagination and sense of fun soon transport the children into a wild adventure. Using their five senses to conjure up a world of fun and imagination, birds become pterodactyls, ripples in the water become crocodiles. Zarah and her brother soon realize that the best adventures only happen on the long way home!

Jake Hope and Brian Fitzgerald have created an irresistible and engrossing picture book that is simply wonderful to read aloud.

Uncle Jerome is picking up Zarah and her brother, which means that they are going to take the long way home. Zarah isn’t too thrilled about this, as she doesn’t enjoy walking, but maybe Uncle Jerome can turn this into an adventure that Zarah enjoys.

What I Liked: This story begins with explaining how much Zarah hates walking, and how her dad always uses shortcuts, but they aren’t short enough for her. The book then shifts tone as Uncle Jerome comes into the picture and makes their long walk home into an adventure. On this adventure, they encounter birds that turn into pterodactyls and waves in the water that turn into crocodiles. These fun, transforming moments add humor to the story as we wait to see what Uncle Jerome thinks of next.

The illustrations do a great job of transporting us into the various imaginative scenes that Uncle Jerome is playing out for Zarah and her brother. These vibrant, colorful illustrations do a great job of immersing you in the story and will delight younger audiences as they, too, can imagine these scenes playing out.

Final Verdict: Uncle Jerome takes Zarah and her brother on a fascinating adventure as they walk home using his imagination and sense of wonder. Children aged 4 and up will enjoy this book, and you can use it to inspire their imagination and see what adventures they come up with on your next walk with them.
