A band of intrepid explorers embarks on a voyage through a strange frontier filled with mystery and beauty: the human body.
Donning his frock coat and ruffle collar, Tusseson documents everything that happens in his logbook: traveling by boat across the Stomach’s Stormy Sea, paddling through the Small Intestine’s Emerald Green Canals, camping at the Lungs (despite all the wind!), climbing the Muscle Mountains, escaping through the Nerve Forest to marvel at the night sky, Iris, reflected in the Pacific Tear Channel. As his fellow travelers return home one by one, Tusseson is left to carry on alone… but he won’t give up until he finds the Mystical Meadows of the Brain. Featuring lush and surreal illustrations, The Expedition renders the systems of the human body into wondrous landscapes that take readers on a fantastic voyage like no other.

In The Expedition, a group of explorers goes on a journey through the human body. During this journey, Tusseson documents everything that is happening in his logbook, including camping at the lungs, climbing muscle mountains, and escaping through the nerve forest. Tusseson’s team returns home one at a time, but he carries on alone as he won’t give up until he makes it to the brain.

What I Liked: The Expedition uses vivid illustrations and descriptions to take you on a journey through various parts of the human body. The opening of this book shows you the various places that the team will travel to and how those are referenced. Each page goes into more depth to showcase just what it was like traveling through a boat across the stomach and through the tunnels of the small intestine, etc.

What left me wanting more: While this book states that it is appropriate for children ages 3 and up, this book is more suited to children ages 6 and up because of the number of words per page and the content of this story. Younger children may not be as invested in learning about the human body and may find some illustrations scary, such as the banks of the circulatory system. Children 6 and up will enjoy learning about the human body and how each of the parts of our body is connected. They would enjoy the travels that Tusseson is on with his team and the way he writes about each day.

Final Verdict: The Expedition is an adventurous journey that takes you through the wonder that is the human body. Through vivid descriptions in tune with each of our senses, Tusseson takes us on a great expedition through the human body and leaves us wanting to know what more he will find. Children ages 6 and up, along with adults reading this book will enjoy how the vivid descriptions bring each part of the human body to life.
