Discover the true story of Kathy Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space and the only woman who has been to both outer space and the depths of the ocean, in this inspiring nonfiction picture book biography.

Growing up, Kathy Sullivan always knew the world was bigger than her neighborhood. She loved to study maps and wonder about distant places. And when she was six years old and saw Sputnik in the sky, she knew space would be the most amazing adventure of all.

One of the first six trailblazing women to join NASA’s storied astronaut corps, Kathy was the first American woman to walk in space and a veteran of three shuttle missions. She was in the first NASA Astronaut Group 8, provided support for the first Space Shuttle mission and the Kennedy Space Center crew, and was part of the team that launched, rescued, and maintained the Hubble Space Telescope.

After spending 532 total hours in space, Kathy left NASA and fulfilled another dream: traveling to the sea floor. Kathy became the first woman to travel to the Mariana Trench, the lowest known point on planet Earth. Kathy never forgot the maps she loved as a child and followed her curiosity to the highest reaches and most sunken depths—farther than anyone else.

THE HIGH-FLYING, DEEP-DIVING ADVENTURES OF KATHY SULLIVAN is a very straightforward and fitting title. Kathy Sullivan is a very interesting woman, and this book shows readers the journey she took from young child to astronaut and oceanographer.

This book dives deep into Kathy Sullivan’s life. From the very beginning when she was fascinated with maps to the trips she took on ocean vessels. It allows readers to get a feel for who Kathy was at different points of her life and why she made certain decisions in her life. As someone who had never heard of Kathy Sullivan before, this book was very informative and I’m thrilled to have learned about her.

This book has interesting illustrations. They look like flat paintings, with smears and missed spots that add to the charm of the images. The illustrations are simple and they remind me a lot of a child’s drawings and I mean that in a good way. It suits the tone of the book. I also really appreciate the details in the background, like the text on chalkboards and uniforms. The colors are also great, they manage to capture the atmosphere of each location.

This book encourages readers to follow their dreams and chase the adventures that interest them. Despite setbacks and having to make difficult choices, Kathy Sullivan managed to follow her wild dreams into space and the deep ocean. It’s a great message for young readers, especially when it comes to work. Follow your passions and it can lead to amazing things.

THE HIGH-FLYING, DEEP-DIVING ADVENTURES OF KATHY SULLIVAN is a great book for young readers interested in STEM. Encouraging readers to follow their dreams, it highlights the importance of perseverance and working for what you want in life.
