The Very Last Drop takes a sped-up fictional look at the central role a watering hole plays in the survival of animals in the savannah. The illustrations have a bit of silliness with the speech bubbles of what the animals are saying to each other to balance the somber reality of what happens when the water dries up. Young readers are introduced to the many wild animals that depend on a water source. When the ostrich returns to no water after being run off the first time, you get the sense of awareness of what a big deal the water had been without having to say it. Overall, this makes for a good first look for young readers to understand the delicate state of nature.
