Whisper Walker #2 is going to be amazing!!
Good Points
Whisper Walker had me hooked from the start. In the opening pages, we meet one of the two main characters, Drake Adair, after he falls into a pit and discovers himself surrounded by bones - human bones! Thus, I was thrown into this post-apocalyptic world where humans are only safe within fenced, guarded compounds and mutants, both human and animal, await to devour them outside the gates.
I really enjoyed the world-building in Whisper Walker the most. It almost feels like the setting is a character in the story, which is really neat. It's clear that London Cole was greatly inspired by his childhood hometown of Whidbey Island. Now I want to vacation there - just not the post-apocalyptic version ;-)
Drake and Kelsie are flawed but believable characters. I really enjoyed their playful banter and slowly blossoming relationship. They have been friends since childhood, when Kelsie ran away from her maniac father and Drake rescued her, but now that they're older, they've become more aware of each other and their own sexuality. It was more the budding romance and not the action that kept me turning pages. I just had to know when they would finally figure out that they both saw each other as more than friends!
There is an air of mystery throughout Whisper Walker, as we discover things -and people- are not really who and what they seem to be. Drake can see the ghosts of souls that have passed on, Kelsie is secretly a kick-ass kinda girl, and there are strange things happening to the Guild leader; things that, left unchecked, could destroy what's left of Drake and Kelsie's shattered world as they know it.
Whisper Walker rated a solid four stars for me because the book was unique and interesting, and the plot and characters demanded that I keep turning the pages until the end. I do think the writing could have been more solid in some places, and the ending felt a little lacking, though still suspenseful. I am really looking forward to Book #2 and anticipate that we'll see a lot more action from Drake and Kelsie - in more ways than one ;-)
