About the Book:
The First Pharaoh is an action packed story about Rah who has emerged from the Rift and his only goal is to conquer the land of Kemet.
Rah is accompanied by two young warriors, Nuit and Geb. Their path leads them across the fertile hills of Canaan, but all is not well in the tranquil land. Nephilim giants have dominated the region and their alpha is challenging Rah directly for a fight to the death.
What will happen to the god king? SLJ says that The First Pharaoh is sharply laid out, high contrast compositions; and manga influenced Illustrations. Along with being an action packed take on Egyptian mythology that will appeal to teens who like anti-heroes.

I love a good graphic novel. I think it’s a great medium to introduce stories in a different way. This helps appeal to those who might get distracted by just words on a page but it also helps narrate stories. And some stories are better with images.
The First Pharaoh tells the story of god king Rah as he emerges from the rift. His goal is to conquer the land of Kemet with the help of his two warriors, Nuit and Geb. As they travel, they hear of different struggles and Rah sets out to correct them and conquer the land. As the story goes on, it is clear that Rah is resolute. He will not waver in his ideals and will judge those accordingly.
I think this was a great introduction to the story of Rah, especially to those who aren’t familiar with it. This medium allows the story to be told in a way that makes it more appealing and easier to take it. The art work was absolutely wonderful and I found myself staring at the pages to take it in.
The first volume of the collection took a bit to understand. I will admit, I struggled with it at first but then decided to just keep pushing forward and hope that it would all circle back and make sense (which it did). As Rah continued his journey, everything started to align and the story felt more cohesive.
My only concern is the conflicting age group this is meant for. At first, I was made to believe that this was for middle grade but then a lot says young teens. My reason for this concern is because this is a heavy story – and while I know it’s based on the mytho and lore of Rah – there is a good bit of detail. The killing and cannibalism could be a bit much for the younger side of the intended audience so please keep that in mind.
Otherwise, I feel like this graphic novel is a perfect introduction to the story of god king Rah and would definitely recommend it!
