Two children’s book superstars—#1 New York Times bestseller Jacqueline Woodson, the author of The Day You Begin, and Leo Espinosa, the illustrator of Islandborn—join forces to celebrate the joy and freedom of summer in the city, which is gloriously captured in their rhythmic text and lively art.

It's getting hot outside, hot enough to turn on the hydrants and run through the water--and that means it's finally summer in the city! Released from school and reveling in their freedom, the kids on one Brooklyn block take advantage of everything summertime has to offer: Freedom from morning till night to go out to meet their friends and make the streets their playground--jumping double Dutch, playing tag and hide-and-seek, building forts, chasing ice cream trucks, and best of all, believing anything is possible. That is, till their moms call them home for dinner. But not to worry--they know there is always tomorrow to do it all over again--because the block belongs to them and they rule their world.

In Brooklyn in the summer not so long ago, children had to go outside and find ways to entertain themselves like playing tag or kick the can. They would get excited for the ice cream truck and everybody was a friend. There was a lot less hate and a lot less crime. Things were simple without electronics to distract them. Children had to go out and interact with each other instead of sitting behind a television screen.

THE WORLD BELONGED TO US brings the reader back to the time before electronics ruled our lives and when children enjoyed the world around them. They could do anything their imagination came up with and had friends all around the block. The illustrations bring a nostalgic feel and makes me wish I was a part of those Brooklyn summers. They're inclusive in races and I love how the author talks about how different languages were spoken too. It didn't matter where you were from because everyone enjoyed each other's company. I have to say that I also love the dedication "To my childhood friends, tag you're all it." It's witty and brought a smile to my face.

Final Verdict: THE WORLD BELONGED TO US is a story of friendship and outdoor activities and is perfect to inspire children to get off their electronics. For those parents who want to show their children how much fun you can have with very little, this is the perfect book.
