Why did Itsy Bitsy make his famous journey? With a dose of warmth and whimsy, Steve Light’s remarkable, intricate artwork spins a backstory of unexpected friendship.

Itsy Bitsy sits at home,
drinking tea, all alone . . .

Everyone knows the rhyme “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.” We know about the climb up the waterspout, the washout, the return of the sun, and the determined climb back up the spout—again. Generations of children have sung this beloved verse and mastered its accompanying twisty finger play. But what sent the tiny spider on his upward trek to begin with? What happened along the way—and where is Itsy now? Steve Light—with his meticulously rendered, highly detailed pen, ink, and watercolor illustrations and an endearing cast of insect characters—riffs on a classic as he offers some surprising answers, ushering us into a charming tale of perseverance, kindness, and community. And it all starts when a branch falls from a tree . . .

I like that this book takes the classic nursery rhyme, ITSY BITSY SPIDER, and gives it so much personality. The text is short with pieces and parts of the nursery rhyme mixed in with a little bit of new text but the real delight is the detailed illustrations. The pictures invite a reader to stop and peruse over the details. It is sure to delight readers as they see the familiar parts of the rhyme combined with the new parts. I like that this story has become a book about friendship and community in the new home found on the water spout. This book will resonate with people who have experienced natural disasters or relocation and the banding together of neighbors that can come from the shared experience.

I loved reading A Spider Named Itsy with my children!

It was great to see why Itsy was making his trek to begin with; the added background information was son fun and cute, while staying true to the original nursery rhyme.

The illustrations were phenomenal; highly detailed and beautiful. My children loved spotting all the different insects.

This is a wonderful children's book about perseverance, as well as friendship.
