In the second book in the Bat, Cat & Rat picture book series from New York Times bestsellers Ame Dyckman and Mark Teague, the roommates try to compromise on vacation plans in three-and-a-half sweet and silly stories.

Bat, Cat, and Rat decide they need a vacation, but planning a trip is no picnic. Conflicts, compromise, and some well-meaning pranks ensue as prep work brings out the trio’s mischievous side.

In “Working,” Bat, Cat, and Rat discover their Vacation Jar is empty, and set off working odd jobs to save up funds. But Rat believes that all work and no play is no fun at all—and he knows just the way to fix that.

In “Choosing,” the trio can’t decide where to go on their vacation. Bat wants an adventure, Cat wants some R&R, and Rat just wants everyone to stop bickering about it.

In “Vacationing,” Rat takes the vacation planning into his own hands. Will he be able to come up with a compromise that makes everyone happy?

Bat, Cat, and Rat’s dynamic friendship and amusing antics are sure to have readers laughing.

Vacation revisits Bat, Cat, and Rat as they decide they need a vacation. This isn’t an easy thing to plan though as conflicts, compromise, and some pranks happen when prep work needs to be done. This book has three and a half stories, in the first one the trio finds that their vacation jar is empty so they have to find a way to save up funds, the second story has them trying to decide just where to go on vacation, in the third story, Rat takes all their money and decides he will plan the vacation so everyone will stop bickering.

What I liked: Bat, Cat, and Rat are a hilarious trio and you can’t help but read on about the various antics that they get into. The first story in this book has this trio working odd jobs but through each of the jobs, there are pranks that happen making one of the members unhappy with the job. The first story showcases how teamwork can help you in reaching your goals, and also how you can have fun while still getting work done.

The two last stories in this book are great as Rat gets tired of all the bickering and comes up with his own solution. This shows the character’s ability to problem solve and shows children that sometimes the answer isn’t right in front of them and they need to think creatively to solve the issue. This is a great moment in which Rat listened to what his friend’s needs were and made it so that everyone was getting what they wanted including himself.

This is a great series for younger readers who are learning to read as there is a good balance between the illustrations and the words on the page. This story is also great for reading aloud to a younger audience as it will keep them engaged throughout the book.

Final Verdict: Vacation is a delightful and engaging read for young audiences as it combines humor, teamwork, and problem solving in an entertaining way. Through the trio’s antics, children will learn valuable lessons about collaboration, creative thinking, and listening to each other’s wants and needs. This book is both fun and education which makes it a perfect addition to young reader’s library collection.
