Meet the Author: Brittany Mazique

Brittany Mazique discovered from an early age that most of the characters in her favorite books did not share her skin color. So she just reimagined them that way instead. She is the author of the upcoming Millie Magnus chapter book series, Delphine Denise and the Mardi Gras Prize as well as several Disney books including The Little Mermaid: Adventures on Land, Tiana and the Mardi Gras Parade, Snow White and the Princess Ball, and the 75th anniversary retelling of Cinderella. Brittany is dedicated to creating literary escapes for marginalized children and communities.

About the Book: MILLIE MAGNUS FOR MAYOR

The second installment in a hilarious and charming chapter book series featuring exuberant and irresistible third-grader Millie Magnus. When Millie Magnus hears hints of a plan to tear down the neighborhood playground, she knows she and her friends absolutely can’t let that happen. Millie believes she’s the obvious choice to lead the charge—she lives with the mayor after all. And no one, and I mean no one, cares about saving the playground more than her. But when a group of cool fourth graders known as the Real Chill Pickles join the effort, Millie discovers that being a good leader might be trickier than she thought. The more Millie tries to tell everyone what to do, the more they don’t want to work with her. Soon, the Pickles and a few of her friends have quit, leaving Mayor Millie to wonder where she went wrong. Is it possible Millie’s memories with her dad at the park have made her a tad overzealous? Can she make up with her friends and confront her fear of change before it’s too late?

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
Funny enough, Millie Magnus for Mayor was actually my first idea—before Millie Magnus Won’t Be Bullied even existed! I had it all mapped out, but then Millie did what Millie always does—she made her own rules and pulled me in another direction. When it came time for book two, I realized this was the perfect way to show how she’s grown since finding her voice in the first book.
YABC: How has writing this sequel been different from the first book?
When writing the second book there’s pressure to keep the energy going that just isn’t there with the first book. You’re also challenged to stay true to what characters would say and do but in new fresh settings and scenarios. I love it!
YABC: How do you know when a series is finished?
For me, it’s when a character has grown as much as they can for their age. Of course, I could dream up endless antics for Millie, but if she’s already learned the lesson or had the growth spurt (the emotional kind, not the jeans-don’t-fit kind), then I’ll know, sadly, that it’s time to let Millie move on.
YABC:   How do you keep your ‘voice’ true to the age category you are writing within?
Easy! I live with children in this age group and am constantly being fed material. It’s hard to keep up with the fun dialogue I encounter daily.
YABC: What type of scene do you love to write the most?
I LOVE a fast pace exciting scene with back-and-forth dialogue that suddenly brings the main character’s life to a screeching halt with a dilemma. I also love a slow warm scene where things get vulnerable.
YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
New characters are always tricky! In this book it was Greta Perez, Millie’s effortlessly cool older neighbor. Readers already love Millie’s crew, so I had to make sure Greta fit in while also shining in her own unique way. (Book three spoiler: Millie herself decided to give me the most trouble—but that’s a story for another day!)
YABC:  What word do you have trouble overusing?
Does an exclamation mark count? I have a hard time not overusing those!
YABC: If your character could meet a character from another book, who would it be?
I’d fast-forward Millie to age 11 and put her in a scene with Margaret from Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Can you imagine those two? They’d be unstoppable.
YABC: How do you plan to celebrate the launch of your book?
With my dream team: my husband Edward and my two little muses, Margaux and Millie. They’re as much a part of this series as I am, so celebrating with them feels just right.
YABC:   What’s up next for you?
Well now all I can think about is an 11-year-old Millie Magnus and Margaret! But officially—book three is on the way, and Millie has a few more surprises up her sleeve.
