When Tom visits an art gallery with his grandma, he wanders into a side room and discovers a very special exhibition indeed.
One by one, the cats in the paintings come to life and follow him as he views all the pictures, until a large and scary cat makes them all rush back to the safety of their own frames.

Ruth Brown has brilliantly imagined her own masterpieces in this playful exploration of the artistic styles of famous painters through the years. Tom discovers 13 painters from Mondrian to Munch and Kahlo to Klimt, learning along the way about the artists themselves, art styles, and even breeds of cat! This is an intriguing introduction to art for the young that will be pored over by children and adults alike.

For lovers of cats and fine art, A Gallery of Cats reimagines iconic paintings if cats were inserted in each scene. A young boy Tom takes a happy wrong turn in a museum to come across the collection, and is guided from one piece to the next by a Jackson, a messy, modern-painted cat.

This is a fun collection of cats brought to life in the style of famous artists, exactly what is promised by the title. I enjoyed the feline reinterpretations of classic paintings, and how each one is personified in a particular cat. Vincent (Van Gogh) is elusive and unsociable, while Edvard is as easily spooked as The Scream.

This both book captures and inspires a love for art and cats, and the power of collections to spark imagination.
