Lily the fairy tries to help her human friend, Willow, overcome her stage fright in this first chapter book in the Fairies Welcome series from New York Times bestselling illustrator Bea Jackson.

Even though Lily is a fairy and Willow is a little human girl, they’ve become the closest of pals, singing sweet songs, counting twinkly stars, and enjoying yummy snacks.

When Willow tells Lily she’s super nervous about performing in a big school celebration, Lily isn’t sure how to help her. Then, with fairies Sky and Jasmine by her side, Lily comes up with an idea: they’ll surprise Willow at school! But will their secret plan be too dangerous, especially for teeny tiny fairies?

Willow and Lily are good friends even if Lily is a fairy and Willow is a human girl. Willow shares with Lily that she’s nervous about her upcoming performance in her school celebration. Lily isn’t too sure how she can help Lily without being spotted by the other children so she goes to the other fairies for help. Sky and Jasmine help Lily come up with an idea, they’ll surprise Willow by going to school with her.

What I Liked: The book opens by introducing you to Willow and her fairy friends as they hang out near the fairies home. It’s fascinating to see as Lily, Sky, and Jasmine come up with a plan to surprise Willow, and just how they get to her school. The size differences between the humans and the fairies are apparent when they are illustrated near items such as apples.

This book is perfect for young readers who are new to chapter books as each chapter is short, and the font is large. The illustrations do a great job of breaking up the text to help children imagine what is happening throughout the story. While the illustrations are in black and white, they add to the story and the details in each illustration helps to distinguish the individuals.

Final Verdict: Fairies Welcome: A Surprise for Willow is a quick paced chapter book perfect for children ages 4 and up who are ready to start chapter books. Children will enjoy the fun antics the fairies get up to trying to keep hidden from Willow’s friends.

A Surprise for Willow and A Wish for Lily. Tiny fairies helping their human bestie through stage fright and beach adventures? The friendship themes are so sweet and gentle, but still full of real stakes that ocean wave had me holding my breath!
