Big Red Tub

Stan and Stella are taking a bath in their big red tub, but animals keep on arriving and jumping in too! When the purple hippo tries to get in, he pushes the tub through the door, down the stairs, and eventually up into space until they are brought back home again. The final page shows all of the animals as bath toys, slippers, soap bottles, etc.

I love reading this book with small children. The pictures are large and vibrant enough to work with a crowd and the text is the perfect length for toddlers and preschoolers. The final page let's us talk about imaginations and how fun it is to pretend things.

In one of my storytimes, as we discussed whether the adventure was imaginary or not and what they could imagine at their bath times, a four-year-old girl very seriously informed me that she knew that it was imaginary once they got into space because they weren't wearing space helmets. She went on to say that she couldn't pretend this kind of adventure because her bathtub was too big to fit through the door. Classic kid comments!
