This story shows the strength of a community in a large city to help each other. Carina is used to making Empanadas with her Tía Mimi but one day she is busy and Carina gathers up the ingredients herself. She goes to the familiar shops and learns that the ingredients she uses are the same as in their culture so it is the same but different, just like the people in the barrio. The text is complex with words from other languages mixed in for authenticity and exposure to the language. The color palette used has rich warm tones and the illustrations are soft and inviting. This book celebrates the diversity and community that can be found in big cities in America and has a vibe like Sesame Street. It will also make you hungry!
