Kai is really looking forward to Valentine's Day, and his parents help him prepare for the day by decorating at home, making special cookies to share, and even waking him up in the morning with a special sign. There are heart shaped pancakes for breakfast and a before school picture. At school, Kai's teacher spend the day helping children make boxes for their Valentines and cards for their friends, making sure that everyone is included. Kai is a little anxious, but when the party begins he is glad that he is able to make his friends happy by giving them a thoughtful card. The book includes a Valentine's Day sign on perforated card stock for children to use.
This is part of a series that includes books about getting ready for kindergarten and Halloween, so readers who found those books comforting and informative will enjoy seeing this look at how to celebrate this winter holiday.

Good Points
The artwork reminds me a bit of series books in from the 1990s that I read to my children, but there is much more diversity in the characters, who have different skin tones. There is even a girl with a limb difference. The easy to read text is in a sans serif font, making this a great choice for emerging readers to tackle on their own.
I now feel like a complete slacker at celebrating holidays-- I even kept my children's Valentine's shoeboxes so we didn't have to decorate new ones every year! If this holiday is a big deal in your house, you'll want to add this book to a seasonal collection that includes Marsh's Bigfoot's Big Heart, Wan's I Lava You, Baker's Ha-Pea Valentine's Day, Woitas' Bobbby and the Big Valentine, Morris' Flubby Does Not Like Valentine's Day, and Satterfield's Cupig.
