“Science In The Service Of Immaturity.”
If your child is interested in intro-level gadgetry, practical jokes, or basic security measures, this may be just the gift to occupy both their mind and sense of humor. The kit/book combo comes with a circuit board, speaker, LED, photodetector, door alarm switch, push-button switch, component wires, switch pin, battery clip, choose-a-sound switch, and alligator clip. The book itself is a light 32-page paperback with explanations, examples, and colorful circuit-based illustrations all appropriate for an 8 to 12 year old.
*As the disclaimer on the package fairly warns: “You need a 9-volt battery, tape, a little curiosity, and a lot of attitude.”
Sound effects include: applause, sad trombone, scream, and (of course) a sort of farty sound. The emphasis is on pranks and privacy alarms, but the instructions on setup and execution of these different possible functions have a fair bit of educational potential. The book-based instructions include practical tips for preventing problems and troubleshooting complications that may arise.
The prank suggestions are generally harmless—no electric shocks or excessive meanness encouraged. For parents who can put up with the audio stimulus, I salute you.
