Have a Good Trip, Mousse! Is an early chapter book great for fans of Frog and Toad. There is more text per page and short chapters to support newly independent reading. This fantastical Mousse decides to go on vacation and invite best friend, Barnacle. However, Mousse must learn how to cope with someone wanting to be their new friend. Three’s a crowd, and young readers can relate to the feeling of jealousy and how to make it work. The world-building and illustrations are whimsical and occasionally nonsensical. The word choice should be easy to read for most of the book. There is the word 'exfoliation' used on their spa day, which young readers most likely have not experienced, and it is a bit of a hard word to sound out, so some older help may be needed in places. Overall, this is a gentle story with a relatable premise that works well for beginning chapter book readers.
