Hoot Hoot is about a child at bedtime who hears noises. On each page, the reader has a cut-out page and an animal noise, and the next reveals which nighttime animal it is. While the book takes place at bedtime and features nighttime creatures, beware of reading this book when you are trying to get a toddler to sleep. This book happened to be the last to be read after a stack of books, and my niece was relaxed and on the cusp of a nap when I picked up this book to be read. The cut-out pages were so engaging that I felt her immediately perk up and engage with the book. She ran her hands over the texture created by the cutouts and poked tiny fingers in during the page turns and took the book from my hands to explore for several minutes.
So, overall, this book is an excellent book to capture a toddler’s interest and keep them riveted. I would just rate it low on a scale of appropriate bedtime books! One minor observation that didn’t affect her enjoyment at all, but would have been a bonus visually, is if they could have incorporated the cutouts into a useful image after the page is turned, too.
