Hop on Pop is one of those classic beginner books that many kids grow up reading. From my perspective, it is simple while remaining silly, and honestly, really useful when it comes to teaching young kids how to read. I have actually used this book when helping kids learn reading basics, and it worked really well because the words are short, repetitive, and easy to sound out.

What makes the book helpful is the way it plays with rhymes and simple word patterns. Kids can easily see how changing just one letter creates a new word, like pop, hop, or top. When I used it with kids, I sometimes covered the first letter with my finger so they could focus on the ending sounds. It helped them notice patterns in words, and that made reading feel less confusing and more like a fun game.

The book is also very engaging for kids. The colorful and goofy illustrations keep their attention, and the silly situations make them laugh while they are learning. Even though the title makes it sound like the kids are being disrespectful to their dad, it really just comes across as playful and lighthearted. It feels more like a fun way for kids and parents to spend time together while reading.

Of course, it is a very simple book. It does not have deep characters or a complicated story, but that is not really the point. It is meant to help beginners practice reading in a way that feels fun instead of frustrating. For that reason, Hop on Pop is still a great choice for early readers and anyone helping kids take their first steps with books.
