In How Far Are the Stars, Mama Cat’s kitten is curious and wants to know everything about the world. This kitten asks Mama Cat how big the world is, how deep it is, who the world belongs to, and how far away the stars are. Mama Cat encourages her kitten to find the answers to these questions by exploring and wondering and together they discover that the world is bigger than their imagination and it belongs to all.
What I liked: Mama cat’s kitten has so many questions and this line of questioning all begins with the question of how big the world is. When Mama Cat provides her kitten with an answer, the kitten can’t fathom how large that is so it tries to compare the size to things that it is familiar with. As the kitten asks if the earth is as big as some of the animals it is familiar with, humor is added to the story, and this is paired with an image of all these animals stacked on top of each other.
The images in this book take you along the story and showcase the various places that Mama Cat and her kitten are exploring. This book starts off during the daytime and as the questions continue and venture into questions about space, the stars, and who the world belongs to, it shifts into the night time. The transition from daytime into night time is a smooth transition and makes this a great story for bedtime as children transition into sleeping.
Final Verdict: How Far Are the Stars is a heartwarming tale about the wonder and curiosity that a child has, along with the strong bond that is developed between a mother and her child. Children will enjoy hearing as Mama Cat answers all of the questions that her kitten has and encourages the kitten to find answers without being frustrated with all the questions. Adults will laugh as they reminisce on moments when they too asked a lot of questions or when their children were at the stage in which they are curious about everything.
