How do you throw the world’s best tantrum? Here are ten ways to help little ones navigate big feelings using fun, calming exercises.

Your hands turn into iron fists.
Your giggles are all gone.
Your body’s trying to tell you
there’s a tantrum coming on.

Sometimes your day doesn’t go how you planned it. Or there’s too much noise, and the light is way too bright. Small feelings can turn into overpowering feelings, and now there’s a tightening in your chest or a pounding in your head. A tantrum is coming, and it feels like it can’t be stopped, but you’re not worried, because you know what to do! You start with a deep breath, and a slow count from one to ten. Then maybe you’ll break into a silly dance, or find a cozy, comfy hideaway, or play an easy game by yourself so you can win. Soon enough, those big feelings will quiet down again—because you know how to tantrum like a champion. With a playful, soothing text and dynamic, stylish illustrations, Allan Wolf and Keisha Morris offer the perfect blueprint for readers of any age to keep those overwhelming feelings from taking them by surprise.

Finally! A book that addresses tantrums with both humor and practical wisdom. Wolf has created something that feels like a breath of fresh air in the world of social-emotional learning books for children. The tongue-in-cheek title immediately caught my attention, and the content absolutely delivers.
What I love about this approach is how it validates children's big emotions while teaching regulation strategies. Instead of shaming tantrums or dismissing feelings, Wolf acknowledges that these intense emotions are normal and then provides concrete tools for managing them. My preschooler has started using some of the techniques described in the book during his own emotional moments.
From a child development perspective, this book is gold. The strategies are based on solid emotional regulation principles but presented in ways that young children can understand and implement. We've practiced the breathing techniques, used the visualization exercises, and even created our own "feelings thermometer" inspired by the book's approach.
The illustrations are engaging and relatable - kids will see themselves in these pages. My toddler may not understand all the concepts yet, but she loves the pictures and is already absorbing the message that big feelings are okay and manageable.
What really sets this book apart is its practical application. We've incorporated several of Wolf's suggestions into our daily routine, and I've noticed a real difference in how my preschooler approaches challenging emotions. When I was getting frustrated in the grocery store a few days ago, my son reminded me to “breathe deep.” The book provides a common language for our family to talk about feelings and coping strategies.
This has become required reading for any parent dealing with the challenging but normal world of childhood emotions. It's respectful, practical, and genuinely helpful.
