Iris moves to the country from the big city, and she is sad. She'll miss so much about living in a city: noisy streets, long apartment building hallways (all the better to skate upon), music from adjoining apartments. And much more.

Iris's parents tries to cheer her up, but Iris refuses to be cheered. But then her grandfather takes her for a walk--and they discover something marvelous: a treehouse. And something even more wonderful: a friend in the treehouse. When Iris meets Walter, it's the beginning of a warm friendship. The two share everything: tree climbing, hill rolling, hide and seek. Although Iris will always fondly miss her city life, she finds much to be happy with in her new home--especially her new friend.

This is one of those comforting, somewhat old-fashioned (while remaining timely) tales that makes the reader feel cozy. The cheerful classic-feeling illustrations are perfect for the story. IRIS AND WALTER is an easy reader geared for ages 6-9, but younger children will enjoy hearing this story of true friendship read aloud.
