It's Time for Berries was a cute look on traditional Inuit practices of gathering berries and other land uses. My child really liked the different ways that the two sisters, Siasi and Siloah, spent time with their ninguiq (grandmother). He especially liked the berry picking, as that is something he can connect with!
I would have loved for some recipes to go with the berries toward the end of the book, since that is the main focal point of the story. It would have been a fun and interactive way to bring the story to life.

I feel like the writing style was a bit much for the target audience to read solo, but great for teacher/parent led reading time. The Inuit language used was a bit hard for me to grasp/pronounce, but there is a glossary at the end of the story. I would have like if the pronunciation was maybe written in parenthesis next to the word, or anywhere on the page really, as I am not one to flip back and forth.
I LOVE that they were included though.
Dual language books are a big hit in my household, and the fact that this was something other than Spanish or French for my kids was a big deal.
There aren't too many children's books, that I know of, about Inuit life, so this was a great glimpse into it for kids, and how the seasons differ compared to ours, even though they are similar.

The illustrations were so nice! They reminded me of cartoons I used to watch as a child.
The emotion that the illustrator conveyed with these images went perfectly with the story! The food looked good enough to eat, yum!
