When Black Girls Dream Big is an affirmation that black girls can be anything they want. I love the powerful image of the child right next to great African American women of our time to emphasize the point that if they can do it then she can do it. This is a lovely introductory read that is powerful in its affirmations, but it could also be used as a springboard to do in-depth research on the historical figures mentioned to find out why they deserve a spot in this book. The illustrations are bold and engaging perfectly complementing the tone of the words. Children need to see themselves in the literature they read and this is a perfect way to accomplish that.
