Mara Hears in Style will resonate with children who wear hearing aids. Mara has hearing aids in her favorite colors but that still does not stop her from worrying how her new classmates will think of her. This book highlights the ups and downs of having hearing aids when others around you don’t. Thankfully, she meets a few friends who think it is cool that she knows sign language and bond over learning how to communicate with it. I love that this book portrays realistically the struggles and neat things about being different. I think this book works well to teach hearing children patience and understanding as well as hearing impaired children a character who is like them. Overall, this book has great representation and is a realistic portrayal of children with hearing aids.
