Microbes (Earth’s Smallest Superheroes) delivers another lively, comic-book-style science adventure from Alix Wood, and it’s just as engaging as the other titles in the series.
The layout is bright, energetic, and playful, organized like a true superhero comic, this makes learning about a complex topic feel surprisingly fun and accessible.

There is a lot of information packed into these pages, but it’s presented in a way that keeps readers interested.

The photographs and images are vivid and striking, doing an excellent job showing just how tiny microbes really are while still giving a clear sense of their shape and variety. The author explains that microbes come in many forms, both good and not-so-good, and I appreciated the balanced approach.

I had no idea how many types of microbes exist or how widespread they are, found literally everywhere. I especially loved learning about all the ways microbes help us: making medicine, helping produce everyday foods like vegan sausages, yogurt, bread, and cheese, and even cleaning up pollution. That was a fascinating surprise! At the same time, the book doesn’t shy away from explaining harmful microbes and illnesses, including a helpful section on how to prevent infection.

The glossary and index at the end add even more educational value and make the book practical for homeschoolers and science lessons. Overall, this is a fun, informative, and surprisingly eye-opening read.

This book is full of information about the various microbes that inhabit the earth. We are introduced to microbes that are important to various habitats and ecosystems, including our body, and how microbes are helping the planet.

What I Liked: This book is written in a way that hesitant readers will enjoy, as the images are interspersed throughout to keep one’s attention and break apart the text. This book does a great job of taking you through many topics in a two-page-per-topic format. Since it keeps things brief, the information is accessible for a younger audience and keeps them intrigued enough. If you want to learn more about any of the topics that are introduced in this book, you could check out their references to learn more.

This book does a great job of showcasing how microbes are not necessarily all good or bad, and how they each have their place in the world. It was fascinating to learn about the oldest microbes and the ones that live in our bodies. The illustrations add to the text in the book by giving us a look at what others see under a microscope when examining these microbes.

Final Verdict: Microbes (Earth’s Smallest Superheroes) is an intriguing read that children ages 8 and up will learn a lot from. Children will enjoy learning about microbes in this interesting format that reads like a graphic novel. This book is a fantastic introduction to the world of microbes and just how important they are to each environment.
