In Millie Fleur’s Pumpkin Problem, the residents of Garden Glen are a bit distraught about the coming fall months as their flowers are disappearing. Millie Fleur though is excited for the fall season and has a spectacular plan, she is going to make a pumpkin patch to bring smiles to her neighbors. Unfortunately for Millie Fleur and her town, the gourds have a mind of their own and have taken over the whole town, making there be too many pumpkins for them to keep up with.
What I Liked: This book begins by introducing you to Millie Fleur and the town of Garden Glen. It explores the reason that the town residents aren’t big fans of the fall but why Millie Fleur is looking forward to the season.
There are some surprising scenes in this story that add humor to this book such as the shed having legs and walking away. This scene was shocking and made me pause because this was out of left field for the story, and it was fascinating to see how this scene plays out for the rest of the book. It was interesting to see the chaos that this shed caused by one act and without knowing what it was doing.
The illustrations throughout this book are soft and simple and help bring you into the town. The various things that Millie Fleur’s community members do with the pumpkins are interesting such as pickles and pumpkin cocoa. It’s wonderful to see the town come together and welcome visitors to their pumpkin patch to solve the original problem that they were having.
Final Verdict: Millie Fleur’s Pumpkin Problem is a great book to pick up for fall season and to see the various things that gourds can be used for beyond pumpkin decorating. Children ages 4 and up will delight in finding new ways to use pumpkins, and seeing all the variations that gourds come in. People of all ages will enjoy the stickers that are included at the end of the story that make it so you can put your favorite characters from the book anywhere.
