MIND VS MACHINES is an interesting look into the world of artificial intelligence and technology. The book guides the middle grade reader to understand what AI is, how it works, and some of its applications and limitations. The book uses lots of graphics and conversational language to put these concepts into terms young readers can understand and enjoy learning about.

What I loved: This was a really fascinating look into AI and generative AI. The information level is great for young readers with topics that will interest them, such as video gaming or using it educationally. While the book mostly focuses on the good side of AI, it does include some cautions and limitations of AI, such as how it is programmed to be a good conversationalist and tells you what you want to hear.

The format of the book is fantastic with lots of graphics, call-outs, and sidebars of interesting facts and examples. This is great for middle grade readers who will love the visual breaks and additional information presented in such a fun way. For example, there are graphics of characters playing video games, small comics showing how people interact with AI, and small sections of key information and examples, such as good vs bad prompts used for AI.

The book almost feels like a magazine and is every bit as catchy. Readers can digest the information in these small chunks and appreciate the visual appeal of the dynamic layout. The book uses a conversational tone and explains things well, so readers will easily follow along.

What left me wanting more: Kids are particularly susceptible to AI and its issues. While there is a little bit of its limitations and challenges sprinkled throughout, I would have appreciated a bit more and more information on careful and thoughtful use of AI. This could feel a bit hype-focused, but parents/caregivers could (and probably should be anyway) have conversations outside of the book to discuss some of these challenges.

Final verdict: MIND VS MACHINES is an interesting look at the world of AI and developing technology. Approachable language and dynamic layout make this an entertaining nonfiction look into AI tools for middle grade readers.
