NEVILLE’S GREAT ESCAPE follows the titular Neville, a penguin who has to escape after being eaten by a killer whale. This picture book is set in the same universe as Frank’s Red Hat.
This picture book is a short but fun read. Full of whimsy and charm, it’s a solid read for young readers who want a fantastical tale about a penguin escaping a killer whale. The humor in this book fits with the story.
The art in this book is beautiful and matches the tone and setting really well. It’s a wash of black and white in the beginning, reflecting a frozen landscape. When Neville is eaten, the images switch to a pink palette. A mess of colors that highlight the inside of the whale’s mouth. The illustrator did a fantastic job at showing the settings.
NEVILLE’S GREAT ESCAPE is a sweet and short story about Neville never giving up. The illustrations capture each setting beautifully and the story has a fun, light-hearted tone.
