NICE TO EAT YOU is a kid’s picture book inspired by the story of Hansel & Gretel. A sneaky witch attempts to lure a group of children into her house. But her verbal blunders are making it a more difficult problem than she had intended. The kids aren’t sure what’s happening: are they getting a treat or are they the treat?
The wordplay in this book is a lot of fun. Just about every page ends with a highlighted word. That is the word that’s being misspoken by the witch. I had a lot of fun trying to figure out what the witch was meaning to say. Some are easier to guess than others and more than one had a funny reveal!
The illustrations in this book are so colorful and clean! Each character looks unique and it’s easy to keep them apart even if it’s not necessary. The witch is especially easy, having a sense of flair and wonder about her that the other characters don’t have. The illustrations go from cute and cozy to slightly spooky, but they all work beautifully in this book! The illustrator, Carolina Coroa, does a fantastic job at keeping the illustrations unique and alive. There always seems to be some form of movement happening in the images.
This is a fun story. Not a serious read and definitely not a heavy one. It’s a great choice for the Halloween (or Summerween) months when you might want to read something a bit spookier with your kids. I don’t think this book ever verges into being inappropriate, but you may want to read through it first just to ensure it’s a good choice for your family.
NICE TO EAT YOU is a fun book with great wordplay and stunning illustrations!
