Review Detail

Adult readers will appreciate this more than young ones; after a certain age, it's obvious that "exciting" more often than not means that your transmission blows two hours before you are supposed to drive to Cleveland for an important event. This seemed delightfully jaded for a picture book, since so many titles are upbeat and hopeful in a way that can be a bit grating after a day of adulting that includes diaper blow outs and tiny socks being sucked into the washing machine drainage hose. (Not that I'm speaking from experience, of course.) This attitude would also make this book a great choice for tween readers to read to younger charges!

The illustrations are bright and simple, and it's fun to see the two fish meandering around on the blue background, waiting for something to happen. Several of the pages take place inside the fish that eats them, so are completely black with brightly colored words showing the dialogue. Don't worry; the friends make their way back out!

I feel like I need to make a list of somewhat snarky picture books; sure, you could include this with other underwater adventures, but this book is not anything like The Rainbow Fish! Perhaps Shea's Oh, Are You Awake and Who Wet My Pants, or Haughton's Shh! We Have a Plan are more similar read alikes!
