When a penguin dad ends up far away from his nest, he’s determined to make it back to see his egg hatch by any means necessary in this charming “hero’s journey for bedtime or naptime” (Kirkus Reviews).

On a frozen sea, where the snow falls fast, and the whirlwinds rage and storm, a rockhopper egg, in a stony nest, was lying safe and warm…

Daddy Penguin’s egg will hatch any day now, so when he gets lost and finds himself adrift in an unfamiliar world, he’ll do anything to get back home! From train to helicopter, hot-air balloon to limousine, Penguin hitches rides with helpful folk—but will he make it in time?

This is a nicely illustrated children’s story about a penguin dad’s journey back to his egg after being separated when the ice that he is sleeping on breaks off and drifts away. The story explicitly mentions that this is a rockhopper penguin and talks about the ‘ice floe’ he is on, which opens up the option to explore more about where rockhopper penguins live and what exactly an ice floe is. On the journey back, the penguin uses different forms of transport (train, lorry, helicopter, etc) driven and populated by various animals. The story is in a poem that mostly rhymes and reminds me of books from famous children's authors like Dr. Seuss. For some verses, you must turn over the page to see the last word, allowing more drama and interactivity. Young children can anticipate that final word if this is a regular read. This may not be destined to be a classic children’s tale, but with its nice cozy ending, this could become a regular bedtime read.
