Prudence dreams of flight, though not the kind that requires wings, but rather flight into space. An aspiring journey about dreams, determination, and the power of sisterhood.
After breaking her wing as a baby, Prudence can no longer fly like the rest of her family, but that has never stopped her from dreaming of flight in a different sense. Every night, Prudence and her sister watch the stars and dream of becoming astronauts. When she learns that a comet will be passing overhead, she is determined to watch from the top of the Great Mountain, even if her childhood injury means flying is out of the question.

The hike won’t be easy, but as an aspiring astronaut, Prudence refuses to miss her chance at seeing Comet Paulina blaze across the sky. Telescope in hand, she sets out on the adventure of a lifetime, hopeful that her determination is enough to overcome the obstacles in her path.

Véronique Alarie and Gabrielle Lisa Collard write with a poetic sense of wonder and determination. They have chosen to donate their royalties to the Charles-Bruneau Foundation, as Prudence pays tribute to young cancer patients and their courageous siblings who accompany them in their fight.

Catherine Petit’s illustrations are done in bold blues and purples vibrantly represent Prudence’s courage and determination.

Prudence is a small bird who broke her wing in a fall when she was young. Since she is unable to escape danger, she is very nervous, which sometimes causes her feathers to fall out. She also stays close to home to take care of her younger sister, Promise, and imagines what it would be like to travel into space. When Prudence reads that a comment named Paulina will be visible from the top of nearby Great Mountain, she is enthralled, and decides to hike up the mountain by herself, because she doesn't want to endanger Promise. There are many new and scary things she encounters on her hike, but after she experiences things like rain, bright sun, and snow, she realizes that they aren't dangerous. Her fear, however, causes her to lose most of her feathers on the journey. When she is near the top of the mountain, she missteps, and plunges through the ice into freezing water. Luckily, Promise has woken up, read her sister's note, and followed her up the mountain, collecting her sister's feathers and braiding them into a scarf to keep Prudence warm. She's able to use the scarf to save her sister. The two brave birds enjoy seeing the comet, and are glad to be together. An author's note at the end shares that this story is based on Noemi, who fought cancer but passed away at the age of 11, and her sister, Daphnee, who helped her through her struggles. The profits from this book are being donated to the Foundation Charles-Bruneau, an organization working toward a cancer-free future for children.
Good Points
The purple and dark blue color palette gives a magical feel to this book, and the touches of pink and lighter purple will delight young readers. Prudence's blue feathers stand out against the snow at the top of the mountain, so it would have been easy for Promise to track her.

It's often hard for young readers to persevere at activities that are hard for them, so the message of dealing with health challenges and adapting one's life to them will help them gain empathy and perhaps perspective. Watching Prudence set a goal to observe the comet and joining her in her treacherous journey up the mountain may teach children that it is possible to do hard things.

Similar picture book titles about facing adversity and triumphing in the face of it include Wall's I Worked Hard on That, Banks and Mason's The Winter Bird, or Calvert's The Fastest Tortoise in Town.
