Rafa and the Wrong Legs

Lucas has tackled every parent's worst nightmare with such skill and sensitivity. Rafa promises his mama he'll stay close in the grocery store, and he does try, following those familiar blue pants with white polka dots. But when he gets distracted and tries to return to his mama, he discovers the wrong pair of legs in blue pants with white polka dots!
What I absolutely love about this book is how it handles a scary situation without being traumatic for young readers. Lucas manages to capture the genuine fear and confusion a child would feel while keeping the tone manageable for preschoolers. My own kids immediately understood Rafa's mistake and could relate to how easy it would be to follow the wrong person when you're focused on something specific.
From a child development perspective, this book is incredibly valuable for teaching safety concepts. The story provides concrete visual cues - like remembering what your grown-up is wearing - that young children can actually use. We've practiced the "stay close" concept and talked about what to do if you can't find your grown-up, using Rafa's experience as our starting point. To help guide parents through these conversations the book includes a guide for the adults reading the story.
The illustrations by Ana Sanfelippo perfectly capture a child's eye view of the grocery store - all those towering legs and overwhelming aisles. My toddler loves pointing out all the different people's legs and trying to spot mama's polka-dot pants. The visual storytelling really helps children understand how easy it would be to get confused in a busy place.
What makes this book particularly brilliant is the practical wisdom it offers without feeling like a lesson. It includes helpful guidance for parents about preventing and handling separation situations, which I appreciate as someone who's always thinking about safety education. This has become part of our pre-grocery store routine conversations.
