Saving Piku is a book about overcoming fear as a community. Piku is a penguin that is in danger when a terrible snowstorm comes to the island. Only when the community hears the father’s cries and come surround Piku does he warm up enough to survive the storm. The illustrations depict the “beast” of a storm with lots of squiggles and swirls to communicate how hard it is to see and survive the storm.
The cover has statements like Friendship over fear and dealing with feelings which feels a bit misleading. Yes, Piku’s friends must brave the storm to find him and surround him, but we don’t really see from their perspective, so the messaging doesn’t hit as close to home as it could to teach the power of friendship and how it applies to children being helpers.
Overall, this story reminds me of the movie Happy Feet in many ways and has a great message about the power of community. The story is intense with the idea that the baby penguin may not survive, which may not be suitable for sensitive readers.
