On the longest day of the year, during the summer solstice, flowers explode like tiny fireworks of joy.
A community comes together to savor the golden days of summer and celebrate the summer solstice, by gathering in a large community flower garden. Children pick flowers and weave flower crowns, symbolizing their friendship and connection to the earth, spreading happiness and kindness. Summer Solstice Wish is a joyful celebration of the glorious long days of summer that seem to pass all too quickly.
In the spirit of their picture book Winter Solstice Wish, author Kate Allen Fox and illustrator Elisa Paganelli have returned with another luminous solstice story. This gorgeous book is set in the Pacific Northwest and inspired by a Scandinavian tradition of making flower crowns to mark the summer solstice. Back matter includes information about what's happening, scientifically, during a summer solstice and suggestions for how to make a flower crown.

Summer Solstice Wish by Kate Allen Fox feels like stepping into the longest, warmest day of the year and realizing everything is blooming at once — flowers, friendship, and that quiet kind of happiness kids don’t always have words for yet.
Set during the summer solstice, the story follows a community gathering in a flower-filled garden where children weave crowns, share moments, and celebrate the peak of summer light. It’s less about a traditional plot and more about atmosphere—a gentle unfolding of a day when everything feels golden, soft, and connected.
The illustrations are absolutely radiant. Think sunlit petals, warm greens, and that glowing “everything is alive right now” feeling on every page. The artwork really leans into the sensory side of summer — you can almost feel the heat of the sun and the softness of the flowers just by looking at it.
What stands out most is the book's calm rhythm. It doesn’t rush. It lingers. It invites kids to slow down and notice things — the act of making flower crowns, the joy of being outside together, and the idea that seasons have meaning beyond just weather.
It also has that subtle educational layer about the solstice itself, but it’s woven in so gently that it never interrupts the story’s flow. It’s the kind of detail kids might ask about afterward, which makes it perfect for curious little minds.
Perfect for:
* summer storytime sessions
* classroom seasonal units
* nature-loving kids
* calm bedtime reading (especially after a busy day)
* craft tie-ins like flower crowns or outdoor activities
Overall, Summer Solstice Wish is warm, luminous, and quietly magical — a picture book that feels like holding sunlight in your hands for a few pages longer than you should.

The Summer Solstice is a magical time where beautiful flowers are in bloom and everyone can come together to have fun and work together.
What I Loved: The illustrations in this book was so eye catching and colorful. The summer solstice is a great day to celebrate and this book really encourages children to get out and enjoy the day. To collect flowers, connect with nature and have fun with their friends.
What Left Me Wanting More: There is a lot of lore behind the Summer Solstice that kids would adore, I would have loved to have seen even more. But the book will definitely give kids a fun book to read, help them learn, and it encourages them to get involved with their local community.
Final Verdict: A charming, interesting book for kids who love the outdoors. There is plenty to see and it shows kids how to make flower crowns which is a fun activity. I would recommend it.
