Tardigrades (Earth’s Smallest Superheroes) by Ruth Owen is another fantastic, high-energy entry in this visually fun science series. Using the same comic-style layout as the other titles, this book turns one of Earth’s tiniest creatures into a full-on superstar. Tardigrades are already incredibly cool, but this book shows how adorable too.

The information is engaging without being overwhelming, showing how tardigrades have managed to survive on Earth for millions of years. I was honestly shocked to learn there are about 1,500 different species of these tiny “water bears”! Even more incredible is their ability to live practically anywhere—mountain tops, ocean floors, moss, hot springs, frozen landscapes, and even outer space conditions. The book does a great job explaining these mind-blowing survival skills, especially their “tun” state, in a way that kids can understand.

The glossy pages, crisp photographs, and fun illustrations make every spread visually appealing. Readers really get a sense of what these microscopic creatures look like up close, and the details are fascinating. I especially love the section showing how scientists are inspired by tardigrades, the idea that something so small can influence research in medicine, space exploration, and survival science is truly compelling.

As always, the book includes a glossary and index, making it a great fit for classrooms, science units, and curious young readers who love discovering unusual animals.

This is a wonderfully accessible introduction to a creature that feels straight out of science fiction but is hiding in places as ordinary as garden moss. A fun, weird, and surprisingly adorable read.
