More fascinating than any fiction, this collection of one hundred true tales from America's history makes for engrossing reading. Sure, we all know about famous Americans like Paul Revere, the Wright brothers, and Benjamin Franklin-- although the stories told in this collection give us the rest of the story and make us realize how much we don't know (for example, I never realized that Ben Franklin, trying to show off for buddies, shocked himself senseless). We also are treated to many obscure tales here, like the introduction of bananas to the New World in 1804. They weren't exactly a hit! People wondered what to do with them, couldn't figure it out, and the whole shipment rotted.
Along with these gripping stories (and the delightful illustrations accompanying them), the author includes "story arcs" that connect events by topic.
If you love history, you'll adore this collection. If you think you hate history, this irresistible book may very well change your mind. Highest recommendation.
