American Girl Magazine presents The Babysitter’s Handbook to help girls like you get the 4-1-1 on taking care of kids that are not your age. FYI: You need more than this handbook to be a good babysitter. One: Take a babysitting and CPR/emergency procedures class. Two: Do research on your own. Three: be a mother’s helper or babysit family. I give it 4 stars for that reason.
This book covers those inevitable FAQs like the amount you should be paid or about running a business. Next, read about helping kids adjust (i.e. distract them and play). Then, it’s time to cook! Make sure you clean the dishes and eat at the table! Also, play with babies, toddlers, and older kids. Stop a fight. Comfort the kids when they’re going to sleep. Learn basic disciplinary rules. Help change a diaper or potty train. Protect kids from safety hazards.
The Babysitter’s Handbook: The Care and Keeping of Kids is a helpful and good start to learning about babysitting. I thought it was charming, cute, and a big help for starters. I enjoyed the FAQs and safety because they are very interesting and informative. I would recommend this for ages 10 and up.
