Jade loves dogs and would like to have one of her own, but her brother Toby is very young and her father is struggling to balance work and child care after the death of the children's mother. When her father sees a "Love My Pup" group online, she's excited, because it is an organization devoted to pairing people who have dogs and need help with people who would love to be dog parents but can't swing it. It takes a while, but eventually Jade's family is paired with Milo, a very young Golden Retriever puppy, and his owner Caroline. Milo has a lot of energy, and when Caroline has to go into the office, can get into trouble. Jade loves walking the dog, and they have a great time romping in the woods and frolicking along the beach. Milo is even very good with Toby. Things are going quite well until Caroline gets another job... in Paris! It means moving away, and Jade is sad, but she's devastated when Caroline says she won't be able to take Milo with her and will turn him over to a rescue. Since he is young, the chances that he will get adopted soon are good, but Jade knows her family can't adopt the energetic puppy. She tries to enjoy her last walks with him, and even snuggles up with him for a short nap at the park! Unfortunately, Toby runs off when Jade and her father aren't looking, and the two are frantic. They hope that Milo might be able to help them find Toby, and figure out that Toby has slipped out of the gated park. Luckily, Milo manages to track him down. Toby had heard a family talking about ice cream, and followed them out of the park, hoping for a sweet treat. Jade and her father find him outside of an ice cream hut. Shaken, they return Milo to Caroline, but realize that Milo is the perfect dog for their family, and offer to adopt him, which makes everyone (especially Milo!) very happy.
Good Points
There are SEVENTY of these short animal rescue books by Holly Webb, which include stories about dogs and cat. The covers are uniformly adorable, and the books contain a good number of interior illustrations as well, which will make them even more appealing to young readers. They are comfortably formulaic, although the idea of Love My Pup is an unusual one, but a concept that has great merit! I've often thought that older people who don't want full time pets would be perfect for matching with people who have dogs but need to go to the office all day!
Jade shows a very mature attitude throughout the book, even though she desperately would love to have a dog of her own. She understands setting boundaries for Milo, and also that young puppies need lots of walks to burn off their energy. Even though Toby is the main reason she isn't allowed a pet, she doesn't hold this against either her brother or her father, and she is shown reading stories to Toby and being a very good sister to him.
Caroline is a good pet owner as well, although it did seem a little unusual that she didn't quietly ask the father if he could adopt Milo. The family was clear that they weren't quite ready for a pet, but the book clearly last out that Milo is a good fit for the family.
Series books are a great way for emerging readers to get a lot of practice under their belts as they navigate familiar storylines and easy text with the support of a lot of illustrations. These are all stand alone books that can be read in any order. Add Webb's dog and cat books to a menagerie that includes Murguia's Wagnificent, Miles' Puppy Place books, Camerons' Puppy Tales series, and Danta and Robertshaw's Life in the Doghouse books.
