What I Loved: This butterfly has 200 miles to fly to reunite with its friends and find flowers. It is such a big goal for one little butterfly. Fog separated this butterfly from the others that started with it on the journey. Being alone makes giving up seem like it would be much better for this very dramatic butterfly. The calm reassurance a passing whale gives him the support system needed to keep flying.
Children of all ages can identify with this butterfly who would like the easy way but learns sometimes you have to put in the miles to make the goal.
The illustrations are vibrant and the text is easy to follow. The expressions of the butterfly add to the humor and outrageous things the butterfly does to avoid traveling 200 miles. This book was a perfect read-aloud that left my elementary-age children in stitches! Even after the story ended, they were repeating their favorite parts.
Final Verdict: This humorous story, The Little Butterfly That Could is a great read-aloud for elementary children learning about persistence. This book is a companion to The Very Impatient Caterpillar.
