An emotional picture book tale of heartwarming tenderness and unconditional love between a mother and child that readers will find touching and dear
A little mouse searches and searches the forest for the most wonderful gift for his mother. What can he give his mother to show her how much he loves her? Perhaps a pine cone full of pine nuts? Or a beautiful flower? Or an eye-catching feather? But when the day of the birthday arrives, nothing turns out as he expects. . . . How will the little mouse show his love?

A young mouse is so excited for his mother's birthday, but unsure of what gift to give her. Looking around, there are many gifts available, but few make it home unscathed. A pine cone with delicious pine nuts is a husk of itself when finally rolled home. A flower loses its petals, and a pretty bird feather blows away. There's even the reflection of the moon in a pond that the mouse captures in a piece of moss and takes home, but the next day, the moss is dried out and the moon is gone. Upset, the mouse tells the mother that there is nothing for her special day, but she replies that her child is the best gift of all.
Good Points
Wessex's watercolor and colored pencil pictures, with black ink accents, are very cozy and detailed. There are plenty of greens and browns, reflecting nature, but nice pops of pink and red in flowers and berries. The backgrounds are full of fine details, and young readers will enjoy pointing out ladybugs, bees, snails, and a wide array of wildflowers. The little mouse's facial expressions change frequently, seesawing being hope and disappointment, are it's amazing that just the tilt of a dot for an eye or the angles of the ears can show so much emotion!

It's hard to put together a gift when one is young and has few resources, so the mouse's attempts at finding objects around him that his mother will enjoy is endearing. I was a little surprised that a bouquet was not considered, since there are so many lovely flowers.

Not assigning a gender to the young mouse is a good ploy, since young readers will be more easily able to see themselves in the role of the gift giver.

There are many books that show the depth of a parent's love for their offspring, but it's always a popular topic, and The Most Wonderful Gift in the World is a great choice for a baby shower or gift for a new mother. Consider this along with Dodds' The Greatest Gift, Hepworth's I Love You To the Moon and Back All Year Long, Penn's The Kissing Hand, or my favorite, Waddell's Owl Babies, as a frequent reread that celebrates the special relationship between a parent and child.
