The Yellow Road is a whimsical picture book by author and illustrator Sven Nordqvist. The story follows Sam, a young boy who wakes up in a strange land and has no idea how to get home. He meets a mysterious guide who instructs him to follow the yellow road all the way home. Along the way, Sam meets bizarre characters that add an intriguing level to the plot.
What I Liked: The intricate illustrations form the heart of this book, elevating the story. You will recognize some of the characters that Sam meets from fairy tales and nursery rhymes, as well as some pop culture references. I especially liked the nod to the eighties with He-Man and My Little Pony being represented. Each page contains tiny details that will captivate readers. I read this book multiple times and discovered something new on each occasion.
The Yellow Road is less a story about what happens and more about a beautifully detailed journey that sparks the reader's imagination.
