A tale of two ring bearers, TIO & TIO: THE RING BEARERS follows Emilio and Andres, and their parents, on a trip to Mexico. Emilio and Andres are going to be the ring bearers at their uncles’ wedding. The two are excited to visit Mexico and get to explore, but when they get there, they are encouraged to not only embrace their culture but also their responsibility as ring bearers.

What I Loved:
The inclusion of the responsibilities of a ring bearer was a wonderful addition in this book. It’s a job during a wedding that isn’t talked about often beyond the carrying of the rings. To see the parents in this picture book address not only the job, but the important part that it plays in the wedding was refreshing.

Emilio and Andres are encouraged by their parents to speak Spanish while they are traveling. The Spanish words are added into the book and it truly makes the book fun to read. Even children and adults who don’t know Spanish will have a fun time using context clues to translate the words.

This is another book that has done a wonderful job at capturing a child’s imagination. From thinking that they will be dressing as bears to being denied cake, this book manages to show a child’s mind could work when being presented with these situations.

Final Verdict:
TIO AND TIO: THE RING BEARERS is a charming picture book. Love is woven throughout the book, between the two brothers and their parents as well as their love for their uncles and extended family. The book manages to address the responsibilities of a ring bearer in a way that children will understand. The illustrator, Tommy Doyle, managed to do a great job at drawing stunning scenery and backgrounds.

Short, sweet, and charming; three words to perfectly describe TIO & TIO: THE RING BEARERS. Gorgeous illustrations and a heartwarming story come together to make a truly splendid picture book.
