When a loved one dies, grief can isolate us as if we’re hiding under an umbrella of sadness. This touching and wise story will comfort the readers who need it most.

Anna never goes anywhere without her umbrella. Not since the stormy day of her father’s funeral. Under her umbrella, she feels safe—safe to be angry and sad. She refuses to put away her umbrella no matter the weather, both outside and in. And then one rainy day she notices a boy getting drenched, and when she invites him under the umbrella with her, things begin to change.

This heartfelt story explores how grief, like an umbrella, protects us, but also blocks light from our lives. However, with time and healing and help from a friend, we can lower our umbrella to see the sun. And maybe even a rainbow.

Under Anna’s Umbrella is about a child dealing with the death of her father. On the day of the funeral, there is a big storm and everyone uses umbrellas. Anna just doesn’t stop. The umbrella becomes the comfort object to hold on to the last time she was with her dad. The umbrella also serves as a tangible symbol for young children to see her loss and how she carries it around with her. With her loss (the umbrella) she feels angry, sad, and lonely. The illustrations are blue and sedate to reflect the somber tone of the story. Finding a friend helps a new chapter start for Anna. The author and illustrator have done such a fantastic job of sharing Anna’s emotional state with us that at the end, when her mother hugs her, we can ALL feel that hug. This book would be a great option to aid others dealing with their umbrella of grief and to understand that the sun will come again.

Thank you to YABC, Amanda Driscoll, Luisa Uribe and Rocky Pond Books for a copy of Under Anna's Umbrella.
I like the storyline for a young child who finds comfort and safety under her umbrella. She obviously misses someone and finds the umbrella covers her from her feelings. She meets a boy named Henry in the neighborhood who shows her how to have fun without her umbrella covering her.
I am eager to share this book with my little cousin.
