This is one of the best children's books I have seen in a long time. I ordered one from Amazon, read it, and then ordered another copy for a second grandchild. I love to give my grandchildren books, but I read each book before I give it to be sure it meets my standards. OK, so I am the third daughter myself and I have (and always have had) lots of red hair and big glasses, just like Velma Gratch. That is not the only reason I identify with her; everyone would! I particularly like the sisters, who are supportive and friendly.

I have just read "The Tale of Desperaux," which emphatically does not suit my idea of what to put into a child's mind. I cannot understand why it won a Newbery Award. The two books are for different ages, and I mention this only to show that an award is no guarantee of quality.
So we will keep two (at least) copies of Velma Gratch, and the much-praised and movie-made Desperaux will go into the trash. The other review of Velma Gratch does justice to the story but does not really mention the artwork, which is also outstanding.
