When I Became Your Sister is a really gentle and heartwarming picture book that focuses on the bond between siblings. I read this to a young child, and it worked perfectly as a calm, comforting read, especially before bedtime. The story follows two raccoon sisters as they spend time together, going on little adventures, sharing moments, and learning from each other. It doesn’t try to be overly complicated, it just shows what it’s like to have a close sibling relationship, including both the happy and slightly difficult moments.

What stood out to me most is how simple but meaningful the story is. The older sister guides and teaches, while the younger one looks up to her, and you can really see that connection. Even when they don’t fully agree or things aren’t perfect, the story makes it clear that their love for each other doesn’t change. The writing style is short and rhythmic, which makes it easy for younger kids to follow along and stay interested. When I read it out loud, it flowed nicely and kept the child engaged the whole time.

The illustrations are another big highlight. They have a soft, almost collage-like look with calming colors like greens and browns, which makes the whole book feel peaceful. It adds to that cozy feeling, especially as the story winds down with the sisters settling in together. Visually, it really helps create that warm, safe atmosphere that younger readers enjoy.

I think this book is best for younger children, especially those who have siblings or are about to become an older or younger sibling. It would also be great for an older child to read to a younger one because of how simple and smooth the text is. Overall, it’s a sweet, comforting story that focuses on love, learning, and being there for each other.
